California resonates a certain mood to me. It’s a place that captivated me even as a child. Very iconic. Very American. To capture the true spirit of California was something I had to search for. The image had to portray that magical feeling that California presents. What better location for this than the iconic Huntington Beach Pier.
I made the trip to the pier many times, shooting every sunset during my ten day stay – taking decent images, but not one I would be proud to hang on my gallery wall. On day nine, a big storm blew through and I could feel something about to happen. It’s a sixth sense I often get when out shooting in nature.
Setting up again at my preferred angle, the sunset really booted in. Swirling skies above lit the place up like a Christmas tree – reflecting its temperamental and stunning colors in the tidal shallows of the shoreline. I took hundreds of frames as the sunset really started to peak creating a kaleidoscope of crimsons, reds and purples. I named this image “California Dreaming” – evoking that awesome sense of place that this beach is world famous for. No wonder why!
